About that Law in Arizona

From CNN.com, "The simple truth is that the majority of human smuggling in our state is under the direction of the drug cartels, which are by definition smuggling drugs, Brewer's statement said, according to the Associated Press as reported in the Arizona Republic. It is common knowledge that Mexican drug cartels have merged human smuggling with drug trafficking. The U.S. Department of Justice is considering whether to file suit against the law.”

Let’s see, the Feds have a law that allows more enforcement latitude than the new Arizona law. The Arizona law is restricted to when the authorities make a legal stop, not when they just feel like harassing someone. Arizona residents and law enforcement agencies are experiencing the problems of “illegal” immigration up close and personal, and the Feds are thinking about filing suit to eliminate Arizona’s right to protect itself.

This is the proverbial camel, designed by a committee, that was supposed to be a horse. From the LA Times, “The Obama administration officials declined to reveal the basis for the suit. But legal experts say the challenge is likely to include the argument that in passing the law, Arizona violated the Constitution by intruding on the federal government's authority to regulate immigration.” So even if the Feds are not doing their jobs, the people cannot step up and legally do it themselves? From my cousin Rich, “Sure, in Alice’s Wonderland, that makes sense.”

LA Times again, “Obama has said that part of the remedy must include a path to legal status for the estimated 11 million people living in the U.S. illegally. But with mid-term elections approaching, the president has not made the politically explosive issue a legislative priority for 2010.”

If I remember correctly, Mr. Bush, proposed comprehensive immigration law with a path to legal status in 2007 but the Dems shot it down. How sweet the smell of partisan politics? Kind of like a barnyard on a hot August day.

Sometimes I sympathize with the call to “take our country back” from the lunacy that seems to infuse every single action or inaction in D.C.

It seems that the subtle point contained in the word, “illegal” is the problem. Why are we protecting the rights of people who are here illegally and ignoring the rights of our own citizens? I’ve been in many other countries in my lifetime and they all have more restrictive illegal immigration policies then we do. And please don’t tell me that ours is a country of immigrants. I’m a son of an immigrant. A legal one! And please don’t tell me I’m a racist and hate Hispanics (most of the illegal’s). I happen to admire them for their work ethic, family values and especially their “hot tamales”. I just want them to do what other immigrants do; be here legally.

I know. Some of you think that I’m am such a bleeding heart liberal that someone else is writing this column. Truth is that I am. I value human rights over the laws of nations. But I don’t see what allowing illegal immigration is doing for the rights of humans who are already U.S. citizens, especially those of Arizona.

No one knows what they are dealing with better than the people in Arizona. If the Federal Government is so tied up in partisan knots as to be paralyzed into non-action, let the sovereign state of Arizona deal with its own problems. Besides, the gang in D.C. have bigger things to worry about. They have mid-term elections coming. I’m beginning to believe that November will be the most interesting month of the year.

Final note from the LA times, “Arizona officials are girding for the legal challenge. The state has raised $123,000 in private donations to defend the law, according to Gov. Jan Brewer's office. Money has come in from all 50 states, in donations as little as $1.”
